(EX 03) Photographer’s Delight: Lajas Canyon Adventure, Archaeology at Cuevas and Relaxation at the three waterfalls. | |
Complete description:
Combines half-day tours EX01 y 4W01. Includes a pleasant one hour drive (total time roundtrip) through the River Samaipata Valley and 2½ hours of intermediate walking and occasional wading (up to your knees) in the River Lajas amidst surprising rock formations and close contact with the ecology of the canyon, whose lithophytes plants and birds such as the cliff swallow, swifts and thrushes are especially intriguing. Those that want can venture to swim across the Gran Poza Negra ¨Great Black Pool¨ accompanied by a guide.
We head upstream to eat lunch and rest for 2 hours on the beaches of the three Cuevas waterfalls. Just recently a new archaeological site was found at the spectacular hilltop lookout above the valleys of the Rivers Samaipata, Cuevas, and Lajas. A 1½ hour hike takes you to the crop terraces used by the Chiriguana people, a culture descendent from the Chané women captured by Guaraní warriors who had traveled from Paraguay in search of the Loma Santa (Holy Hill) or Tierra sin Mal (the land without evil). From here, the Fuerte can also be seen, a temple of amazon-chané origins. The Fuerte was remodeled by the Incans who converted it into the capital of this province of their vast empire, which was attacked repeatedly by the Chiriguana.
