(HB 03) Guided Horseback Tour to Archaeological Complex El Fuerte.

Feedback from guests

Complete description:

A tour for even the beginner, the experience of horseback riding for a couple of days on centuries-old riding trails used during colonial times is a fascinating journey rich in beautiful landscapes and encounters with culture, flora, and fauna. Our 2-day route is similar to tour HB 01, but the more relaxed pace will allow us to enjoy interpretive nature walks, camping out with our horses nearby, a campfire dinner, and the photogenic sunset and sunrise. Lodging in Samaipata before departing is not needed as for tour HB 01.

Day 1: In the first stage of our trip which starts at a farm in town of Samaipata (founded in 1618), we head up the Agua Dulce Hill for 2½ hrs, alternating horseback riding with leading the horses through the steep parts. We will follow along the peaks and ravines, passing by Cerro Redondo, Los Alisos Summit, Tumbas Viejas, and Loma Larga. We stop to let our horses rest at Loma Larga while we descend until the tiered waterfalls of the El Fuerte stream, where we will lunch after refreshing ourselves in the Canyon of the Orchids. We continue on until reaching the end of Loma Larga where we will camp in the rolling meadows of Los Alisos, at the headwaters of River Cuevas, with plenty of grasses and water for the horses. On foot or on horseback, we set out on a short 1 hour walk to the Totoral hilltop in order to enjoy and photograph the late afternoon, with many great 360 degree landscapes and the occasional bird of prey. The camping will be setted by a nearby stream. Evening meal by the campfire.

Day 2: We have breakfast early and break camp after photographing the sunrise at Totoral Ridge. From there we continue leading the horses by the rein until Tree Fern Pass, where we get to know the usefulness of many edible and medicinal plants and pay careful attention to the presence of green toucanets, guans, and squirrels. From there we ride for 2 hours from one hilltop to the next, all of which offer beautiful views, until we arrive at the foot of the Cincho de los Cóndores (Condor´s belt), a great place to stop for a snack. We will arrive at the El Fuerte Ruins, religious center and Historical and Cultural World Heritage site (UNESCO) after another 1 hour horseback ride, where we dedicate 1½ hours of easy walking to exploring the significance and history of this anticipated site. We have lunch on the mountain’s crest, with a view of the Amboro National Park . Then, our last two hours on horseback take us back into Samaipata. The museum visit (a no-fee optional extra) is a great place to check out the artifacts found in excavations of the area. Across the street, there is a store which sells local handicrafts.
