(FU 05) Trekking at the Archaeological Complex El Fuerte.

Feedback from guests

Complete description:

Especially for those who enjoy a good nature hike and are interested in getting to know the ruins of El Fuerte (the Fortress). The hike starts at Samaipata´s Agua Dulce Mountain. The first part takes three hours of intermediate hiking by the Cerro Redondo (rounded hill) to Los Alisos peak, Tumbas Viejas (old tombs), and Loma Larga (long hill). We continue on until we reach the tiered waterfalls of El Fuerte brook where we will have lunch after a refreshing stop in Orquid´s Canyon. After lunch, 3 more hours of intermediate hiking await us. First we roam the Eagle Path Canyon (not a challenging hike, but can be tough for those who suffer from dizziness or vertigo) that offers great views and oppertunities to get to know the flora and fauna of the mountain crest. We continue through the hills until we arrive at the Cincho de los Condores (Condor Cliff) where last year we spotted condors 80% of the time. From there, we visit two of the strategic lookout points of the El Fuerte ruins (described in tour FU 01). 1½ hours of easy walking is just enough time to visit the ruins and the carved monolith, as we will have already learned much of its history and cultural relevance during the previous hours spent hiking. From the ruins, a car will take us back to Samaipata in ½ hour. The optional no-cost visit to the museum in town (approximately 30 min.) offers the visitor a chance to see artifacts found during excavations in the region. And across the street is a shop that sells local handicrafts.
